UNSC denounces terror attack over Islamabad Imambargah

New York/Islamabad: The United Nations Security Council has issued a strong condemnation of the deadly suicide bombing at an Islamabad imambargah, describing the assault as “heinous and cowardly” and expressing outrage over the targeting of worshippers during prayers.

The attack took place on February 6 at Imambargah Qasr-i-Khadijatul Kubra, located on the outskirts of the federal capital, as congregants had gathered for Friday prayers. Officials reported that at least 38 people lost their lives, while more than 150 others sustained injuries, many of them critically.

In a statement delivered by the council’s president, James Kariuki, the UNSC denounced the bombing in the “strongest terms,” calling the violence senseless and stressing that places of worship should never become targets of terror. The council conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and expressed solidarity with the government and people of Pakistan, while wishing a swift recovery to the injured.

Reiterating its consistent stance, the Security Council emphasized that terrorism in all forms poses a grave threat to global peace and security. Members underlined the importance of ensuring accountability, urging that those responsible  including perpetrators, planners, financiers and sponsors — be brought to justice without delay.

The UNSC also called on all countries to cooperate fully with Pakistan, in line with international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to support efforts aimed at investigating the attack and preventing further acts of terrorism.

Secretary-General of the United Nations, also condemned the bombing, reiterating that assaults against civilians and religious sites are unacceptable and stressing that those behind the atrocity must be identified and prosecuted.
