UNSC unanimously extends sanctions on Yemen for one year

NEW YORK: United Nations Security Council unanimously extended sanctions on Yemen for one more year on Thursday.

The Security Council renewed for one year a targeted arms embargo, travel ban and assets freeze against individuals and entities designated by the Committee established pursuant to resolution 2140 (2014) on Yemen.

UNSC extended the sanctions on Yemen by 26 February 2018. The council expressed concern at the ongoing political, security, economic and humanitarian challenges in Yemen, and threats arising from the illicit transfer, destabilizing accumulation and misuse of weapons.

The council also reaffirmed its “strong commitment to the unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Yemen” and reiterated its call for all parties in Yemen to adhere to resolving their differences through dialogue and consultation, reject acts of violence to achieve political goals, and refrain from provocation.

Yemen has been experiencing a civil conflict since the UN-backed government was ousted by the Houthi militants in late 2014.

The council decided to prohibit the supply, sale or transfer of arms to individuals and entities designated by the Committee as engaging in or providing support for acts that threatened the peace, security or stability of Yemen — as well as to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh and Houthi commanders Abdullah Yahya al Hakim and Abd al-Khaliq al-Huthi.
