US cuts more $60 Million in grants to Harvard University

WASHINGTON: The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced on Monday that it is terminating approximately $60 million in federal funding allocated to Harvard University.

This move intensifies tensions between the Ivy League institution and the Trump administration, which has accused Harvard of issues related to anti-Semitism, presidential influence, and academic freedom.

HHS stated that the funding was cut due to Harvard’s failure to adequately address allegations of anti-Semitic harassment and racial discrimination on campus.

The department emphasized that federal funds are intended to support institutions that ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all students, and that discrimination will not be tolerated.

This decision follows previous actions by the Trump administration, including the freezing of over $2.2 billion in federal grants to Harvard.

Additionally, Education Department Secretary Linda McMahon announced earlier this month that Harvard would no longer receive public research funding, criticizing the university for allegedly undermining higher education standards.

In a letter to Harvard, McMahon suggested that the university could operate as a privately-funded institution, relying on its substantial endowment and donations from wealthy alumni.
