US decides to permanently close Peshawar consulate: Major Diplomatic Shift

ISLAMABAD: The United States has announced its decision to permanently close its consulate in Peshawar, according to information provided to Congress by the US State Department. Peshawar, situated near the Afghan border, has been an important diplomatic and logistical center, with the consulate serving as a vital point of contact for Americans and Afghan nationals.

The consulate, staffed by 18 American diplomats and personnel along with 89 local employees, has played a significant role in offering assistance and services in a region close to Afghanistan.

The closure is projected to result in annual savings of around $7.5 million. US officials clarified that this decision is unrelated to any issues involving Iran. The shutdown will entail a cost of about $3 million, which includes $1.8 million allocated for relocating armored trailers that functioned as temporary offices.

Additional expenses will cover the transfer of the consulate’s vehicles, electronic systems, telecommunications equipment, and office furnishings to the US Embassy in Islamabad, as well as to consulates in Karachi and Lahore.

Post-closure, consular services for American citizens and regional residents will be managed by the US Embassy in Islamabad, which is approximately 114 miles (184 kilometers) away from Peshawar.

This move signifies the conclusion of a longstanding US diplomatic presence in northwest Pakistan, a region of strategic importance for regional cooperation and diplomatic outreach.
