US-Iran ceasefire: PM Shehbaz calls for restraint, respect, hails diplomatic breakthrough

ISLAMABAD: Following a historic ceasefire, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has emphasized the importance of restraint among all involved parties, warning that violations threaten the fragile peace process. In a post on X, he urged all sides to honor the two-week truce to allow diplomacy to pave the way for a lasting resolution.

Shehbaz, who played a key role in mediating the agreement, made his appeal less than a day after Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts helped pause the six-week-long US-Israel conflict with Iran, which has resulted in significant casualties and regional instability. The ceasefire was brokered by Pakistan, with US President Donald Trump agreeing to a two-week halt just hours before a deadline to escalate military action.

The Prime Minister announced plans to invite leaders from both Iran and the US to Islamabad on April 10 to continue negotiations aimed at resolving all outstanding disputes.

Addressing a cabinet meeting earlier in the day, Shehbaz highlighted Pakistan’s evolving global stature, stating, “Today, Pakistan is a transformed nation respected worldwide.” He emphasized that the temporary halt in hostilities is just the first step, with the ultimate goal being a durable peace.

The cabinet members responded with applause as the Prime Minister celebrated what he called a diplomatic success for Pakistan. “By Allah’s grace, Pakistan has achieved a significant diplomatic milestone,” he said, praising the collective efforts of regional Muslim countries in promoting peace amid regional turbulence.

Referring to recent developments, Shehbaz expressed hope that the ceasefire would be sustained and eventually made permanent, saying, “These flames have been doused for now, and, with Allah’s will, they will be extinguished permanently.” He lauded the unity and sincerity of Pakistan’s political and military leadership during this crisis, highlighting the roles played by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, the Foreign Office, and military chiefs.

He credited the diplomatic outreach of Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian, US President Trump, and regional allies such as Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the UAE, Malaysia, Qatar, Kuwait, and China for supporting Pakistan’s peace efforts. Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s ongoing engagement with global and regional leaders, underscoring the nation’s commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East.
