President Donald Trump signed a new immigration detention measure into law on Wednesday, Republican-led House passed the Laken Riley Act.
securing a significant legislative victory early in his second term. This achievement highlights the efforts of the Republican-led Congress to advance his policy agenda.
The detention measure is taken for a 22 year old student at Georgia School, who was killed last year by by an undocumented immigrant.
The purpose of this legislation aimed at theft -related crimes, an attack on a police officer, or a crime that resulted in a serious physical injury such as death or drunk driving or detaining illegal immigrants.
The House gave its final approval of the bill in a 263-156 vote on Wednesday, with 46 Democrats joining all Republicans in favor. The measure also passed the senate last week in a 64-35 vote, with 12 Democrats breaking with their party to back it.
“That’s precisely why I am here uniquely positioned for this role. In fact, it’s the primary reason,” Trump stated during his speech in the East Wing of the White House, as he highlighted what he referred to as a “groundbreaking” law that he believes will protect numerous innocent lives across America.
Trump said, “That’s a tough achievement, But Laken managed to pull it off. Laken Hope Riley will always be remembered by America.”
