WEB DESK: The United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution on Wednesday that called for a ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict
The United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution on Wednesday that called for a ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, accusing other council members of rejecting attempts to find a compromise. As the only member to vote against the resolution, the US exercised its veto power as a permanent member of the council to block the measure.
A senior US official, speaking anonymously ahead of the vote, emphasized that the US would only support a resolution that explicitly calls for the immediate release of hostages as part of any ceasefire agreement. “As we have stated repeatedly, we cannot support an unconditional ceasefire that fails to address the urgent need for the immediate release of hostages,” the official said.
