Violence erupts in Punjab essembly as MPA slaps opponent

LAHORE: Opposition lawmaker Khalid Nisar Dogar assaulted ruling party member Hassan Riaz with a slap during a session in the Punjab Assembly.

The incident unfolded on Monday when tensions ran high during a heated debate, leading Khalid Nisar Dogar to slap Hassan Riaz on the Assembly floor. What started as a verbal disagreement quickly escalated into physical violence, prompting immediate condemnation from other legislators and a temporary suspension of proceedings.

Eyewitnesses reported that the altercation was triggered when Dogar allegedly asked Riaz to refrain from making provocative remarks. The exchange intensified rapidly, resulting in Dogar physically attacking Riaz before fellow members stepped in to separate them and restore order. The session was then adjourned for a short period.

Members across party lines have denounced the aggressive conduct by the PTI lawmaker, emphasizing that such behavior damages the dignity of the legislative process. A government representative, whose identity was not disclosed, emphasized, “Physical violence has no place in this assembly,” and indicated that the assembly’s code of conduct will be reviewed, with disciplinary measures likely to follow.

This episode is part of a pattern of frequent disruptions in the Punjab Assembly, reflecting ongoing political tensions within the province and the broader national landscape. Further disciplinary actions and a detailed investigation into the incident are anticipated to be announced in the upcoming days as the assembly examines the matter.
