WhatsApp may soon let you message anyone without their number

WEB DESK: A new update in WhatsApp could dramatically alter how users communicate on the platform. The messaging service is reportedly working on a feature that would allow users to contact individuals who are not on WhatsApp.

According to information from WABetainfo, this upcoming feature involves creating a shareable link that initiates a chat. Users can send this link via SMS, email, or other messaging apps. The recipient, even without an existing WhatsApp account, can click the link and join the conversation.

When the link is accessed, it opens a secure, end-to-end encrypted chat interface, which resembles WhatsApp Web for the non-WhatsApp user. However, this version will have limitations, such as the inability to share media, send voice notes, or make video calls. Group chat functionality will also not be supported through this method.

While this development could enhance user interaction and attract new users, some details remain uncertain. It’s unclear whether these chat links will expire after a certain period or if users can revisit the same conversation later. The feature appears to support WhatsApp’s initiative to comply with EU interoperability regulations and to improve cross-platform compatibility, similar to Signal.

If rolled out successfully, this feature could act as an entry point for non-WhatsApp users, encouraging them to explore the app further and potentially download it later. Currently in testing phases, this innovation indicates WhatsApp’s move toward more versatile and open communication options. Meta has yet to announce an official timeline for its release.

In addition, WhatsApp is reportedly developing a feature called ‘Quick Recaps,’ which would generate summaries of unread messages across multiple chats. Unlike the existing Message Summaries, which only cover a single chat at a time, Quick Recaps would provide quick overviews from up to five conversations simultaneously, helping users stay updated more efficiently.
