Islamabad: World Environment Day is being observed today (Sunday) to raise awareness about the importance of protecting natural environment from the negative effects of human development.
This year’s theme of the World Environment Day “Only One Earth” calls for transformative changes to policies and choices to enable cleaner, greener and sustainable living in harmony with nature.

The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in his message on the occasion, has said the planet’s health must be safeguarded as the Earth’s natural systems cannot keep up with our demands.

He said this planet is our only home and it is vital for us to safeguard the health of its atmosphere, the richness and diversity of life, its ecosystems and its finite resources.

Meanwhile, Pakistan joins the international community in celebrating the “World Environment Day 2022” on the theme “Only One Earth”.
The Foreign Office, in its statement on Sunday, said Pakistan highly values global efforts to combat climate change, halt and reverse biodiversity loss, reduce pollution, and restore ecosystems. It said Pakistan is fully committed to take ambitious actions to address climate change and environmental hazards.
Minister for Climate Change Senator Sherry Rehman in her message on ‘World Environment Day’ said the climate change is the biggest challenge of the 21st century.
She said Pakistan is one of the few countries in the world facing the severe effects and threats of climate change.
Sherry Rehman said we are facing extreme temperatures and severe drought.
She said our forests are burning, glaciers are melting and rivers are drying up and we have to be careful in using water.
The Minister suggested that there is a need to adopt climate culture to deal with climate crisis and every Pakistani citizen has to play his role for the protection of environment and his mother earth.
