WEB DESK: Today, Tuesday, the world is commemorating World Health Day, an annual event that highlights the importance of health as a universal human right. This year’s theme, “Together for Health – Stand with Science,” underscores the vital role of scientific progress in advancing global health and well-being.
Since its inception in 1948, the World Health Day observance marks the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) and aims to draw attention to pressing health issues worldwide. The theme for this year emphasizes the importance of collective scientific efforts and cooperation in tackling health challenges affecting humans, animals, plants, and the environment.
The observance kicks off a year-long campaign celebrating the transformative power of scientific collaboration. It aims to showcase notable achievements in health science and highlight the need for multilateral partnerships to translate evidence into meaningful action—particularly through the One Health approach, which recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health.
Key global events anchoring this campaign include the International One Health Summit on April 7, hosted by France under the G7 presidency, and the inaugural Global Forum of WHO Collaborating Centres from April 7 to 9. These gatherings will unite nearly 800 scientific institutions from over 80 countries, forming the largest network of its kind under a United Nations agency. Their collective goal is to build a safer, healthier future through science-driven partnerships.
The campaign encourages worldwide participation by celebrating scientific breakthroughs, sharing personal stories of how science has improved lives, and engaging in the conversation using hashtags #StandWithScience and #WorldHealthDay. Everyone is invited to join in fostering a global movement for health and scientific progress.
