World post day celebrated Today to highlight postal Services’ Role in Society

WEB DESK: Today countries around the globe, including Pakistan, are observing World Post Day to emphasize the importance of postal services in daily life and their impact on social and economic progress worldwide.

Founded on October 9th, 1874, in Bern, Switzerland, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) established World Post Day to commemorate its anniversary. The day was officially designated by the UPU Congress in Tokyo, Japan, in 1969. Since then, nations participate annually in celebrations that often include unveiling new postal products and services.

In 2015, nations globally committed to collaborative efforts toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aim to eradicate poverty and hunger, combat inequality and injustice, and address climate change. Postal services play a crucial role in this global mission by providing essential infrastructure for development.

With more than a third of the global population offline and half of businesses not operating online, postal offices—often the sole public access point in remote areas—are vital connectors to the digital economy. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Post For People: Local Service. Global Reach,” emphasizing the postal service’s role as a community-rooted, accessible, and essential public service. From rural villages to city centers, the postal network links individuals and opens pathways to the world.

The primary aim of World Post Day is to raise awareness about the postal sector’s contribution to social and economic development. It encourages member countries to organize activities that promote public and media understanding of postal services and their significance.

Over 150 countries mark this day with various events, including national celebrations, promotional campaigns for new services, and employee appreciation initiatives. Many postal administrations organize philatelic exhibitions, release special stamps and cancellations, and display posters in public spaces. Activities often include open house events at post offices, mail centers, and postal museums, as well as conferences, workshops, and cultural activities. Additionally, some countries issue souvenirs like T-shirts and badges.

Participating nations also honor winners of the UPU International Letter-Writing Competition on this day, celebrating the art of correspondence and communication.
