Islamabad:Today marks World Skin Health Day, an annual observance dedicated to raising global awareness about the diverse range of skin conditions and advocating for better access to treatment and care.

Since its inception in 2013 by the International League of Dermatological Societies (ILDS) and the International Society of Dermatology (ISD), World Skin Health Day has served as a crucial platform to address the often-overlooked impact of skin diseases on global health.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 900 million people worldwide are affected by skin diseases at any given time.

This staggering figure underscores the significant burden these conditions place on individuals and healthcare systems.

Skin diseases are not merely cosmetic concerns; they can severely impact a person’s physical and mental well-being, leading to pain, disfigurement, social stigma, and even disability.

In some cases, untreated skin conditions can have life-threatening complications.

This year’s observance highlights the need for increased awareness, education, and equitable access to dermatological care, particularly in underserved communities.

Despite the high prevalence of skin diseases, many regions lack sufficient dermatologists and resources, leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment.

Activities planned globally for World Skin Health Day include public forums, free skin consultations, educational campaigns, and initiatives to provide care to vulnerable populations.

These efforts aim to bridge the gaps in dermatological care and ensure that skin health is recognized as a global public health priority.
