Zelenskyy says Ukraine will obtain 100 Rafale warplanes

WEB DESK: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced on Monday that he had formalized an agreement with France to procure 100 Rafale fighter jets. This move aims to strengthen Ukraine’s long-term military capabilities in its ongoing defense against Russia’s invasion.

Zelenskiy is currently in Paris for discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron, as Ukraine faces intensified Russian drone and missile strikes alongside reported advances by Moscow in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region.

Speaking to reporters, Zelenskiy confirmed the acquisition of the Rafale jets, emphasizing their importance for Ukraine’s defense. He stated that the deal represents one of the most robust air defense systems globally. The announcement was made during a ceremony at Villacoublay military airport, where he signed a letter of intent alongside Macron, with a Rafale jet and both nations’ flags in the background.

The Elysee Palace validated the number of aircraft involved but did not immediately specify whether the Dassault-manufactured jets would come from France’s existing fleet or be newly purchased.

Ahead of Zelenskiy’s visit, Macron’s office outlined plans to leverage France’s expertise in arms production to enhance Ukraine’s defensive capabilities. The stated goal is to equip Ukraine with the necessary systems to counter Russian aggression effectively.

Earlier on Monday, Zelenskiy attended a presentation by several defense manufacturers, including Dassault Aviation, before finalizing the agreement.

France, in collaboration with Britain, has also advocated for a coalition comprising around 30 countries prepared to deploy troops and resources to Ukraine or position them along its borders once a peace agreement with Russia is reached. Ensuring Ukraine receives sustained military and economic support remains a key priority, bolstering its ability to deter future aggression.
