Smith Sent Back, Coach Stays in Place Amid Scandal

Johannesburg (March 27, 2018): The number one test batsman and Australian captain Steve Smith will be sent home from the tour of South Africa for his role in the ball-tampering scandal, said the team management on Tuesday.

The coach Darren Lehmann will remain in charge, team management said Tuesday.

The Cricket Australia chief James Sutherland said that Smith, vice-captain David Warner and opening batsman Cameron Bancroft, the player caught on camera attempting to doctor the ball with a piece of tape.

Cricket Australia chief stated that “I am angry and disappointed, it is not a good day for Australian cricket.”

Earlier, Smith was suspended for one Test and docked his entire match fee by the International Cricket Council for his role in a plot that saw teammate Cameron Bancroft tamper with the ball during the third Test against South Africa on Saturday.

It means he will miss the fourth and final Test in Johannesburg starting Friday.
