LAHORE: On Tuesday, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif revealed plans to introduce modern electric buses in several underdeveloped districts of Punjab, providing affordable and comfortable transportation at only Rs20 per ride.
Using her official X (Twitter) account, CM Maryam Nawaz shared that a fleet of 100 air-conditioned, Wi-Fi-enabled electric buses is currently en route from Yantai, China, and is scheduled to arrive in Pakistan tonight. She highlighted that these buses feature a fully automated ticketing system and are environmentally friendly, designed to ensure safe, smooth, and relaxing journeys for passengers.
The initial rollout will focus on districts that have historically lacked access to reliable public transit, including Mianwali, Okara, Nankana Sahib, Muzaffargarh, Vehari, Pakpattan, and Dera Gazi Khan. Special provisions will be made to make the buses accessible for individuals with disabilities.
Maryam Nawaz emphasized the government’s dedication to delivering modern, cost-effective, and eco-conscious transportation options to all citizens, particularly those residing in underserved regions.
Meanwhile, earlier today, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the distribution of 100,000 free laptops to talented students nationwide, emphasizing a merit-based approach. Speaking at an event in Islamabad in celebration of International Youth Day, the Prime Minister confirmed that high-achieving students would receive laptops based solely on their academic performance. “This government prioritizes transparency and meritocracy, and we are committed to ensuring fairness in this initiative,” he stated.
The program will benefit students across all four provinces, as well as the federal capital, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
Reflecting on Pakistan’s recent military success, the Prime Minister referred to Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, noting that Pakistan’s victory on May 10 against a larger, boastful adversary reinvigorated national pride. He urged the youth to harness this resilient spirit and strive for excellence to elevate the nation’s reputation
