COAS Asim Munir calls for urgent actions to aid flood-stricken areas in KP

RAWALPINDI: In a significant move, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir has issued targeted directives to assist in the ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts following the devastating floods in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Security officials revealed this development on Friday.

The military leader instructed the stationed troops across KP to actively participate in recovery operations, providing comprehensive support to the affected populations. Demonstrating their commitment, the Pakistan Army has also contributed the equivalent of one day’s salary from all service members to aid flood victims.

Furthermore, the army has allocated over 600 tonnes of ration supplies, representing a full day’s worth of provisions, to support those impacted by the calamity. Additional military units are being deployed to the most severely affected regions to bolster relief efforts.COAS Munir also directed the Corps of Engineers to prioritize the swift repair of damaged infrastructure, especially bridges. He emphasized the importance of installing temporary crossings where necessary to re-establish vital connectivity for stranded communities.

The recent heavy rains have taken a heavy toll, resulting in over 200 fatalities in northwest Pakistan within the past 24 hours. The adverse weather conditions, including cloud bursts, flash floods, lightning, and building collapses, have caused widespread destruction in the mountainous areas of KP.

Among the casualties, at least 206 deaths have been reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with residents describing the situation as approaching “doomsday.” In response, the provincial government has announced a day of mourning for Saturday. KP Chief Minister Gandapur stated that the national flag will be flown at half-mast across the province, and state honors will be accorded to the martyrs during funerals.
