KARACHI: Sindh’s Senior Provincial Minister, Sharjeel Inam Memon, stated that heavy rainfall hit Karachi on August 19, and all government agencies were actively engaged in efforts to clear water from the roads.
During a press conference in Karachi, Memon highlighted that this time, the drainage process was completed within two days, unlike previous instances when water remained on the streets for up to five days.
He criticized Farooq Sattar of MQM Pakistan, accusing him of politicizing natural calamities. Memon emphasized that, despite the heavy rains, the death toll in Sindh stands at only 40, whereas Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab have reported 447 and 165 fatalities respectively. He pointed out that the media has largely ignored these figures and instead launched a campaign against the PPP-led government.
The minister also acknowledged that Pakistan faces numerous challenges due to climate change. Following the recent heavy rains in Karachi, the entire administration, including the Chief Minister Sindh, Karachi Mayor, and provincial ministers, was mobilized on the streets. He noted that draining water is difficult during ongoing rainfall, as city drains and water channels are often blocked or congested.
Regarding the proposal for additional provinces within Sindh, Memon clarified that the 27th Amendment remains just a proposal and that there are no plans to create new provinces within the province.
