ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced on Tuesday that former Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan, who was detained by Israeli forces after the interception of the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla, will be returning to Pakistan on October 9.
Mushtaq Ahmad, affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami, was among several individuals detained earlier this month when Israeli forces intercepted the flotilla, which was carrying humanitarian aid intended for Gaza. The flotilla, consisting of 45 ships carrying activists and political figures, set sail from Spain last month with the mission to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza, where the UN has warned of a looming famine.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Dar shared that he had spoken with Ahmad via phone through Pakistan’s ambassador in Amman upon his arrival in Islamabad from Malaysia. He described Ahmad as being in good health and high spirits. Dar praised Ahmad’s bravery and determination in participating in the flotilla to support the Palestinian cause and break the siege to deliver aid to Gaza.
Dar also acknowledged the efforts of the Pakistani Foreign Office in reaching out to Ahmad in Tel Aviv through a friendly European country’s diplomatic mission, and expressed gratitude for the support and assistance provided by the Pakistan Embassy in Amman to ensure Ahmad’s safety and stay.
Mushtaq Ahmad has shared his harrowing experience during his detention in Israeli custody following his interception aboard the Gaza aid flotilla.
In a video message released after his release, Ahmad recounted being held at Ketziot Prison (also known as Ansar III), a high-security facility located in Israel’s Negev Desert. He described facing mistreatment, including being subjected to torture, with his eyes blindfolded and guns pointed at him. Ahmad also revealed that he went on a hunger strike and was denied access to air, water, and medication during his detention.
Now in Jordan under the care of the Pakistan Embassy in Amman, Ahmad stated he would soon return to Pakistan and intends to share more details about his time in captivity. He reaffirmed his commitment to the Palestinian cause, saying, “We will continue the struggle for Palestine’s freedom.”
