NA approves historic Army act amendment: Army Chief to serve as Chief of Defense Forces for five years

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly has approved the Army Act 2025 following the passage of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, now the army chief will serve as Chief of defense forces for the five years.

According to the proposed Army Act, a new notification will be issued designating the Army Chief as the Chief of Defense Forces. This new notification will reset the tenure of the Army Chief from the date of issuance.

The draft Army Act states that the Army Chief will be responsible for restructuring and integrating all branches of the Pakistan Army as the Chief of Defense Forces. The Prime Minister will appoint the Chief of Defense Forces based on the recommendation of the Army Chief, and this appointment will be for a period of five years.

The proposed law also specifies that the tenure for the Commander of the National Strategic Command will be three years, with the possibility of reappointment for another three years.

Additionally, the bill abolishes the position of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee effective from November 27. The Army Chief will now have the authority to appoint a Vice Army Chief or Deputy Army Chief.Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar confirmed that the Army Chief will now also serve as the Chief of Defense Forces for a five-year term. The Prime Minister will appoint this position, and the tenure will begin from the day of appointment.

He further clarified that the law explicitly states that the term for the Chief of Defense Forces will be five years from the date of appointment.

Finally, the law minister announced that the position of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee has been abolished as part of these reforms.
