No military solution to Russia-Ukraine conflict: Ambassador Asim Iftikhar

WEB DESK: Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar, has expressed concerns over the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, emphasizing that a military solution is unlikely and the possibility of a political resolution is becoming increasingly distant.

During his address, he urged both sides to take practical steps to de-escalate tensions and resolve their differences through dialogue. Pakistan firmly supports efforts aimed at conflict resolution through discussions and negotiation. Ambassador Asim Iftikhar reiterated Pakistan’s longstanding commitment to resolving disputes via diplomatic means.

He conveyed Pakistan’s deep concerns about the situation, highlighting the suffering of people affected by the war. The envoy also underscored the importance of adhering to international laws, stressing that the safety of civilians and critical infrastructure must be prioritized above all else.

Meanwhile, US media reported claims that during Donald Trump’s administration, a secret plan was being developed to end the Ukraine war in collaboration with Russia, with US special envoy Steve Witkoff reportedly leading the effort.

The plan outlined that Ukraine would need to relinquish certain eastern territories to Russia, alongside curtailing its armaments and reducing its military capabilities, including a notable downsizing of its army.

According to reports, another aspect of the plan involved Ukraine potentially agreeing to hand over parts of eastern territory not currently under its control to Russia. In return, the United States and European nations would offer long-term security guarantees to Ukraine.
