Sheikh Hasina sentenced to 21 years in jail for corruption

DHAKA: Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has been sentenced to 21 years in prison on corruption charges, the Bangladesh Anti-Corruption Commission had filed three cases against Sheikh Hasina related to land encroachments near Dhaka.

According to reports, the court delivered the verdict on Thursday, a week after she was sentenced to death for crimes against humanity. The court stated that Sheikh Hasina considered state land as her private property, exploited government resources, and manipulated official procedures for personal and family gains.

Additionally, the court sentenced Sheikh Hasina’s son and daughter, who reside in the United States, to five years each in prison.

It is noteworthy that following violent protests and student demonstrations last year, which resulted in over 1,000 casualties, Sheikh Hasina fled Bangladesh for India via helicopter on August 5, 2024. She has been residing in India since then.

Last week, Sheikh Hasina was also sentenced to death for crimes against humanity, intensifying her legal troubles.
