LAHORE: Transport leaders in Punjab have announced a province-wide strike starting December 8, followed by a nationwide shutdown beginning December 10 as a protest against the Punjab government’s decision to raise traffic fines.
The All Pakistan Goods Transport Owners Association revealed that transporters plan to enforce a wheel-jam strike across the country, giving authorities until December 8 to address their 25-point list of demands.
Both public and goods transport associations argue that the increased traffic penalties are putting an excessive financial strain on drivers and vehicle owners. Representatives of goods transport warned that essential supplies would be disrupted if their demands were not fulfilled by the given deadline.
In addition, goods transporters have emphasized the need to end targeted fines and stressed the approval of all 25 demands, which includes reversing the newly amended penalty structure.
Transporters are also urging for land allocation to establish new truck stands in Punjab and demanding stronger measures against highway robberies, highlighting growing security risks that are affecting their operations across the sector.
