LHC reviews petition challenging ban on social media access for children under 16

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has begun reviewing a petition challenging the proposed ban on social media usage for children under 16, emphasizing the issue’s significance and the necessity for a comprehensive policy reassessment by the government.

Chief Justice Alia Neelam presided over the hearing of a petition submitted by an eighth-grade student, urging the court to reconsider the proposed restrictions. The petition argues that while social media does have certain disadvantages, it serves as an essential tool for communication and learning among the youth.

Justice Alia Neelam acknowledged the matter’s complexity and instructed all relevant stakeholders, including the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and the Ministry of Law and Justice, to submit detailed responses by February 10.

The court underlined the importance of a structured policy approach in addressing the issue. The Chief Justice highlighted that regulating children’s social media use should extend beyond legal actions and also incorporate well-rounded government strategies.

Representatives from the PTA and other concerned authorities are expected to provide insights on the psychological, moral, and educational effects of social media on children under 16.

Supporters of the proposed ban argue that social media has adverse effects on young users’ mental health, moral values, and academic performance. The petitioner has requested the court to evaluate whether such a broad restriction is justified and appropriately balanced.
