Lahore manhole tragedy; Mother and daughter found dead

LAHORE: The bodies of a woman and her daughter, who fell into an open sewer line near Data Darbar in Lahore, have been recovered, sources said on Thursday.

Lahore DIG Operations Faisal Kamran stated the woman’s body was found at a disposal station on Outfall Road, while her daughter’s body was discovered in the Saggian area, about five kilometers from the incident site.

Rescue 1122 spokesperson Farooq Ahmed stated that they received a call at 7:32 PM on Wednesday reporting that a mother and daughter had fallen into an open sewer line. He added that the rescue operation continued uninterrupted until the recovery.

By early Thursday morning, Lahore Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Operations Faisal Kamran informed reporters that the mother’s body had been discovered at a disposal station on Outfall Road. Addressing concerns raised about water flow not being swift enough to carry a person, Kamran clarified that at the time of the incident, the water flow was significantly faster due to peak hours, but it slowed as the night wore on.

When questioned about whether the family intended to file a case, Kamran stated that authorities would follow whatever course of action the family requested.

Earlier, Mohammad Tauqir, Lahore’s Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations, disclosed that the woman’s husband was taken into custody after allegations brought forward by her father. The father claimed that the couple had been experiencing marital discord for several months and expressed suspicion regarding the husband’s role. According to the SSP, it was the husband who initially alerted Rescue 1122, stating his wife and daughter had fallen into the sewer pipe around 7:30 PM.

Last month, a similar tragedy occurred in Punjab’s Bahawalpur district when a seven-year-old boy fell into an open manhole in Dhanote town near Lodhran city and lost his life.
