Somalia advances negotiations with Pakistan over 24 JF-17 thunder jets

WEB DESK: Somalia has moved closer to finalizing a major defense agreement with Pakistan for the acquisition of up to 24 JF-17 Thunder fighter aircraft, in a deal estimated at roughly $900 million (around Rs2.51 trillion).

Sources indicate that senior officials from both sides are engaged in intensive discussions as Somalia aims to rebuild its air force capabilities, which have remained limited since the country’s state collapse in 1991. The proposed purchase is being viewed as a pivotal effort to reestablish national air defense strength.

Negotiations are centered on the JF-17 Thunder Block III model, the most advanced variant of the aircraft, equipped with modern avionics, improved radar systems, and enhanced operational features. The prospective agreement is said to include a comprehensive package covering pilot training, weapons systems integration, and logistical and maintenance support.

Should the deal materialize, it would mark Somalia’s most substantial military procurement in decades and could reshape security calculations across the Horn of Africa.

Reports suggest that Saudi Arabia and Turkiye may play a role in financially supporting the transaction. Pakistan has previously supplied JF-17 jets to Myanmar, Nigeria, and Azerbaijan, while Bangladesh and Iraq have expressed interest in acquiring the aircraft.

Co-developed by Pakistan and China, the JF-17 Thunder has emerged as a cornerstone of Pakistan’s growing defense export portfolio.
