Karachi Universities move to online classes amid rising fuel prices

KARACHI: Several universities in Karachi have decided to shift classes online after a sharp increase in fuel prices, which officials say could create transportation difficulties for students.

The University of Karachi (KU) announced that all morning classes will be conducted online starting March 9 until the end of Ramadan. According to the university administration, the decision aims to make it easier for students to attend classes as the recent hike in petroleum prices may affect commuting.

The Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST) has taken similar steps. Its Karachi campus stated that classes will move online from March 11 to March 16, after which the university will begin its scheduled semester break. Meanwhile, the Islamabad campus will conduct online classes from March 9 to March 27.

The decisions follow the federal government’s move to increase petrol and diesel prices by Rs55 per litre, driven by rising global oil prices linked to the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran in the Middle East.

Government sources earlier indicated that authorities are considering broader measures to conserve energy across the country. These proposals may include expanding remote learning in educational institutions, reducing physical attendance in offices, and encouraging remote work in sectors such as IT and telecommunications.

Officials also suggested that government offices may limit on-site staff to essential personnel while others work from home. Similarly, some private companies are evaluating plans that would allow employees to work remotely for two days each week as part of energy-saving efforts.
