Ex first lady Bushra bibi shifted back to Adiala jail after eye surgery

RAWALPINDI: Bushra Bibi, the spouse of former prime minister Imran Khan, has been moved back to Adiala Jail after undergoing eye surgery in Rawalpindi

Officials familiar with the matter said she had recently experienced vision problems in her right eye. Following a medical examination arranged by prison authorities, specialists diagnosed her with retinal detachment and recommended immediate surgical intervention.

She was subsequently shifted to a private hospital on the evening of April 16, where pre-surgical evaluations were conducted. The operation was performed by Dr. Nadeem Qureshi along with a team of doctors. After remaining under observation overnight, she was discharged and transferred back to jail. Sources added that her condition is now stable, with follow-up care to continue as advised by doctors.

Family members, including her daughter, son-in-law, and sister-in-law, were later permitted to meet her at the prison. Earlier, her sister, Mariam Riaz Wattoo, had indicated on social media that relatives had been called to the hospital ahead of the procedure.

Meanwhile, Gohar Ali Khan, chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), confirmed her hospitalisation and urged authorities to allow immediate family access to both Bushra Bibi and Imran Khan. He also called for the former premier to be provided hospital treatment, stressing that access to healthcare and family visits are fundamental rights.

Bushra Bibi has been in custody since early 2025 following her conviction in a corruption-related case linked to Al-Qadir University. Later that year, she and Imran Khan were both handed 17-year sentences in the Toshakhana-II case concerning the alleged undervaluation of state gifts.

Imran Khan, who has been held at Adiala Jail since August 2023, continues to face multiple legal cases. His health has also been under scrutiny, with reports submitted to the Supreme Court indicating he suffers from central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), a condition that can significantly impair vision.

Medical records show he has undergone several eye treatments, including procedures at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, and periodic health evaluations by specialist medical boards.

Despite court directives for regular health monitoring, requests for his transfer to a private hospital have been declined. Authorities have also maintained restrictions on meetings with the former prime minister since late 2025, a matter that remains a point of dispute between PTI and the government.
