LAHORE: Punjab has rolled out an AI-powered “Smart Cleaning” campaign across the province ahead of Eid-ul-Adha, aiming to modernise sanitation monitoring and improve waste management under the Suthra Punjab Programme.
The initiative was reviewed in a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, where officials outlined a tech-driven system designed to track sanitation operations, monitor staff attendance, and ensure timely disposal of sacrificial waste.
As part of the plan, artificial intelligence-enabled motorcycles fitted with cameras will be deployed to detect garbage accumulation in real time and transmit live visuals for monitoring. The system will oversee more than 40,000 sanitation vehicles and around 176,000 workers through a centralized digital network.
Authorities said strict enforcement measures will accompany the drive, including on-the-spot fines for illegal dumping and expanded waste collection points during Eid days. Special waste bags will also be distributed across the province to facilitate proper disposal.
More than 10,000 locations are set to undergo deep cleaning, while additional attendance checkpoints and digital verification systems will help track sanitation workers. A mobile application will be used for real-time attendance, with field officers assigned to monitor each union council.
The chief minister ordered complete verification of sanitation staff within a week and warned of action against “ghost employees” and absenteeism, including salary deductions where violations are found. She also stressed regular inspections and field presence to ensure accountability.
A 24/7 helpline (1139) backed by an AI complaint system will remain active to address public grievances, while the government also plans to expand waste-to-resource projects under the broader cleanliness drive.
Officials say the initiative is intended not only to improve Eid-related sanitation but also to establish long-term, technology-based cleanliness standards across Punjab.
