ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, has called for the initiation of a widespread climate awareness campaign across multiple languages and communication channels to effectively reach diverse segments of society.
Addressing the International Conference on Green Journalism, Media, Climate, and Social Responsibility—organized jointly by The Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology and OIC COMSTECH—Tarar emphasized the importance of discussing climate justice alongside climate change. He highlighted that nations with higher fossil fuel consumption and greater carbon emissions bear a larger responsibility toward less-contributing countries.
Tarar pointed out that Pakistan’s contribution to global carbon emissions is below 1%, yet the country faces some of the most devastating climate-related disasters. He urged a societal shift to make climate change a central public concern, advocating for environmental issues to be prioritized on social media just like trending topics.
The minister stressed that climate change is among the most critical issues confronting humanity today, and increasing awareness is a crucial step in tackling it. He proposed a collaborative approach involving various government ministries, divisions, and stakeholders within a coordinated framework to promote education and develop practical solutions.
Expressing appreciation for COMSTECH and the conference organizers, Tarar noted that the event underscores the significance of climate consciousness and the role of responsible journalism in fostering environmental awareness.
