Sindh declares public holidays for Ashura on Muharram 9, 10

KARACHI: The Sindh government on Monday announced public holidays on Muharram 9 and 10 in observance of Ashura, according to a notification issued by the provincial Home Department.

The holidays will fall on June 25 and 26, as Muslims across the country observe the days of mourning during

Muharram-ul-Haram, marking the beginning of the Islamic year 1448 AH, as confirmed by the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony.

In preparation for the religious gatherings, law enforcement agencies in Karachi have finalized extensive security arrangements to ensure the safety of processions and participants.

Authorities have also introduced a permit system for those wishing to travel with the main processions from the 8th to 10th Muharram. Individuals are required to obtain vehicle stickers or passes through applications submitted at the DIG Traffic Karachi Office, Garden Headquarters, between June 22 and June 23, 2026, until 1:00 pm.

Applicants must provide necessary documents, including a copy of the vehicle registration, CNIC of the owner, driver’s CNIC, two passport-size photographs of the driver, and an official letter from a registered organization or association.

Officials stated that passes will be issued only to authorized groups such as law enforcement agencies, media organizations, ambulances, and registered institutions. Each permit will allow a maximum of three persons per vehicle.

Authorities further warned that any violation of rules, submission of false information, or misuse of permits would lead to immediate cancellation of the authorization.
