LAHORE: The Punjab government has unveiled a new program allowing students to purchase electric bikes (e-bikes) with a simple and affordable monthly payment plan of Rs2,100, making eco-friendly transportation accessible to many.
The scheme was announced during a meeting led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, with the goal of distributing 100,000 e-bikes to students throughout Punjab within a year. To make this possible, the government will provide a subsidy of Rs70,000 on each e-bike, drastically lowering the purchase price.
Students interested in participating will need to pay an initial down payment of Rs14,000, after which they can pay interest-free installments of Rs2,100 per month.
In a move to support female students, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz declared that the government will cover both the down payment and registration fees for qualified female applicants. These students will only be responsible for the Rs2,100 monthly installment.
The scheme is also open to Punjab government employees, who can avail themselves of the same easy installment plan to buy electric bikes.
Eligibility Requirements:
– Must be at least 18 years of age
– Must be a regular student enrolled in a recognized college or university in Punjab
– Must possess a valid motorcycle learner’s permit or driving license
In case applications exceed the available quota, successful candidates will be selected through an electronic ballot system (e-balloting).
The initiative aims to promote affordable, environmentally sustainable transportation, reduce commuting costs for students, and support efforts to combat pollution.
Additionally, the Punjab government plans to introduce around 10,000 rental electric bikes in Lahore during the initial phase, along with the installation of 300 docking and charging stations across the city. This move aligns with efforts to curb pollution and reduce dependence on petrol, especially amid rising fuel prices and increasing demand for cost-effective transportation options.
