LAHORE: Punjab police have launched a formal investigation into the deadly roof collapse at a tuition centre in Lahore’s Kahna area, describing the incident as a case of “criminal negligence” after 14 children lost their lives.
According to police, the investigation wing is examining the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and is also reviewing whether additional legal charges should be included in the case.
Authorities confirmed that all suspects named in the FIR have been arrested. The female teacher, who was teaching when the roof collapsed, has not been named as an accused but may be questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.
In her statement to police, the teacher said she taught around 30 to 35 students and insisted that no one had deliberately caused the incident. She explained that rainwater had been leaking through the roof, prompting repair work to continue while classes were in session.
She told investigators that nearly 20 children were inside the classroom with her when the roof suddenly caved in.
A preliminary inquiry report submitted to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz concluded that the roof, built with T-irons and girders, collapsed after excessive debris and soil were placed on top during repair work. The report noted that the already weakened structure could not withstand the added weight.
Investigators said at least 20 children and the teacher were present inside the tuition centre when the roof gave way. The children who died suffered fatal head injuries in the collapse.
Police said no evidence has so far emerged indicating negligence by any government department. However, five people, including the building owner and his brother, have been taken into custody as the investigation continues.
