ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is set to export 5,000 domestically assembled MG cars to Bangladesh, a historic development announced by Haroon Akhtar Khan, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Industries and Production, on Thursday.
Addressing the media, Haroon Akhtar described the agreement between MG Motors Pakistan and Bangladesh’s RANGS Motors as a groundbreaking achievement for Pakistan’s automotive sector. He highlighted that this will be the first large-scale export of locally manufactured vehicles from the country.
“This is a momentous day for Pakistan,” he remarked, emphasizing that the deal showcases the increasing global competitiveness of Pakistan’s manufacturing industry.
Haroon Akhtar added that this initiative aligns with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision of establishing Pakistan as a regional manufacturing hub. He also noted that currently, 17 automobile manufacturers are operating in Pakistan, fueling the growth of the domestic auto industry.
The SAPM highlighted the government’s broader manufacturing plans, revealing that over 150 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) have been signed for the production of electric vehicle batteries within Pakistan.
He further mentioned that approximately 95% of mobile phones in the country are now assembled locally, and the government is actively working to initiate domestic production of solar panels to lessen reliance on imports.
Haroon Akhtar also pointed out that the government has issued 86 licenses for the manufacturing of electric two-wheelers, demonstrating its commitment to promoting electric mobility solutions.
On the occasion, Romo Rouf Chowdhury, Managing Director of RANGS Motors Limited, expressed enthusiasm about strengthening cooperation with Pakistan through vehicle imports and indicated that Bangladesh has a significant demand for electric motorcycles.
Shao Jian Qiang, CEO of MG Pakistan, emphasized the importance of providing adequate support and protection to the domestic automotive industry to ensure sustainable growth across nations.
