KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Sindh President Nisar Ahmed Khuhro on Saturday called for the resignation of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, alleging that his recent remarks in support of a “hybrid system” and comments on the failure of the country’s democratic setup amounted to a violation of the Constitution.
The demand came two days after Naqvi met President Asif Ali Zardari at Bilawal House to discuss the political and security situation. Later, while addressing the Pakistan Economic Summit in Islamabad, the interior minister said the existing governance system had “collapsed” and argued in favour of creating additional provinces.
Addressing a press conference in Karachi, Khuhro said a federal minister who publicly questions the democratic system and endorses an alternative model has no constitutional or moral basis to continue in office.
“If Mohsin Naqvi believes democracy has failed and supports a hybrid system, he should immediately step down from the federal cabinet and Parliament,” Khuhro said.
Joined by PPP Sindh General Secretary Waqar Mehdi, Karachi President and Labour Minister Saeed Ghani, and other party leaders, Khuhro also dismissed proposals for creating new provinces, stressing that the Constitution provides a clear mechanism for changing provincial boundaries.
He noted that no new province can be established unless the relevant provincial assembly first approves the move with a two-thirds majority, adding that any attempt to bypass the constitutional process would be unacceptable.
