ISLAMABAD: The Foreign Office of Pakistan has issued a firm condemnation of the recent Israeli airstrikes on Abu al-Duhur Airbase in Syria’s Idlib, calling it a blatant violation of international law. The strikes targeted the airbase near Aleppo, close to the Turkish border, amid reports that Syria was about to permit Turkish military deployment there.
In a statement, Islamabad reaffirmed its unwavering support for Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, emphasizing the importance of regional peace and stability. The FO urged the international community to hold Israel accountable for its destabilizing actions and repeated violations of international norms.
The Israeli government claimed the airstrikes were in response to fears that Syria might allow Turkish forces to deploy at the base, which Israel perceives as a threat to its security. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Syria of nearing a breach of security agreements, while Turkey dismissed these claims as attempts to justify Israel’s actions and called for respect for international law.
Tensions in the region have escalated, with Turkey and Israel exchanging sharp rhetoric over Syria, where both nations maintain active military involvement. Ankara accused Israel of trying to destabilize Syria, while the US is working to establish a deconfliction mechanism among Israel, Turkey, and Syria to prevent further escalation, according to US officials.
