LAHORE: Lahore City Traffic Police has launched a public awareness drive seeking citizens’ assistance in identifying vehicles emitting excessive smoke as part of efforts to tackle air pollution in the city.
Under the initiative, residents have been urged to capture videos of smoke-emitting vehicles and share the footage with traffic police through WhatsApp for registration and necessary action.
According to the traffic police, videos can be sent to 0322-5638888.
Officials said public participation was essential for improving the city’s environment, stressing that controlling pollution required cooperation between authorities and citizens.
The initiative comes amid intensified measures against vehicles contributing to smog and deteriorating air quality in Lahore.
Earlier in July, Lahore Chief Traffic Officer Syed Abdul Raheem Shirazi announced that driving licences of motorists operating smoke-emitting vehicles would be suspended.
He had also said route permits of commercial vehicles violating anti-smog regulations would face suspension as part of the enforcement campaign.
The CTO further reiterated a ban on the entry of tractor-trolleys and dumpers transporting sand or soil without proper protective covers in the provincial capital.
According to a traffic police spokesperson, authorities have registered 1,013 cases against violators during the ongoing anti-smog operation.
For stricter enforcement, special traffic police teams have been deployed at 12 entry and exit points of Lahore, while 45 dedicated teams are carrying out inspections and taking action against violators across the city.
