ISLAMABAD: The federal government is seriously considering declaring an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under Article 232 of the Constitution, Federal Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said, citing rising terrorism and civilian and police deaths.
Chaudhry said the proposal was driven by security concerns, not political differences. He accused the KP government of failing to take sufficient action against militancy and prioritising political activities.
His remarks followed a parliamentary affairs meeting between PML-N and PPP leaders in the National Assembly Speaker’s Chamber on Wednesday. Participants discussed proposed legislation, IMF-related financial matters, plans for the next National Assembly session and bills concerning the Port Qasim Authority, Gwadar Port Authority and nationalisation of life insurance.
Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar described the gathering as a routine consultation on legal and parliamentary issues. He said it was not convened to discuss governor’s rule or an emergency, adding that any such move would have to be assessed by the president and prime minister in line with constitutional and legal requirements.
