KARACHI: A security guard was killed on Thursday after a structure of an under-construction bridge under Karachi’s Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project collapsed near Bait-ul-Mukarram Mosque in Gulshan-e-Iqbal.
Rescue officials said the victim was deployed as a security guard at the construction site when the structure gave way. His identity could not be immediately ascertained.
The victim’s body was retrieved from the debris and transported to Jinnah Hospital for medico-legal procedures, officials said.
Rescue teams later completed the operation and cleared the affected area.
The collapsed structure is part of the Red Line mass-transit project, which is currently being constructed in Karachi.
Compensation case over Red Line accident
The incident comes weeks after a citizen approached the Malir Court seeking more than Rs172 million in damages over the death of his father in a road accident allegedly linked to Red Line construction.
The compensation suit was filed before the Senior Civil Judge of Malir against the Sindh government, the Red Line project director, contractors involved in the construction and other parties.
According to the petitioner’s lawyer, Advocate Usman Farooq, the deceased, Shahid, was travelling on University Road in January when his vehicle struck a concrete barrier placed on the road without adequate lighting.
The collision claimed his life, while his son and wife suffered injuries in the accident.
The lawyer alleged that the barrier had no reflective markings, warning tape or proper signage, making it difficult for motorists to see at night.
The petition contends that the project authorities and contractors failed to ensure required safety measures and adequate protection for road users during construction.
