Consumer group threatens Karachi milk boycott if price hits Rs300

KARACHI: The Consumer Association of Pakistan has warned it will launch a citywide boycott if milk prices in Karachi rise to Rs300 per litre.

Association chairman Kaukab Iqbal urged the Karachi commissioner to intervene and examine the proposed increase. He said farmers’ production costs should be independently assessed before any new price is approved.

Iqbal also called for official verification of reported figures showing Karachi consumes around seven million litres of milk daily, while local production is approximately three million litres.

He urged authorities to establish transparent laboratory testing to monitor milk quality and curb adulteration. He also said farmers, retailers and consumer representatives should be consulted before prices are set.

“Providing citizens with safe, quality milk at a reasonable price is the government’s responsibility,” Iqbal said, warning against placing an unfair financial burden on consumers.
