Tariq Fazal warns KP chief minister’s stance could lead to emergency rule

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry has accused Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi of refusing to cooperate with the federal government, warning that his approach could create conditions for emergency rule in the province.

Speaking to reporters, Chaudhry said Afridi had publicly rejected cooperation with Islamabad and would be responsible for the consequences if he did not change course. He also claimed the provincial government lacked effective administrative control in 12 districts and had been briefed on national security concerns.

Chaudhry urged the KP government to take steps against terrorism, saying the federal government was prepared to act but faced resistance from the province.

He also criticised opposition leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai over the constitutional process to appoint the chief election commissioner and Election Commission members. Chaudhry said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had contacted Achakzai twice, but alleged he declined to meet and instead sought a meeting with PTI founder Imran Khan.

On Imran Khan’s health, Chaudhry said the government was taking all possible measures. He added that the federal government would not permit any attempt to march on or attack Islamabad.
