ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Sherry Rehman on Thursday said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had missed a valuable opportunity to find a way out of the political deadlock, adding that no politician wanted the imposition of an emergency.
Speaking during a debate on Articles 232 and 234 at a joint sitting of Parliament, Rehman criticised PTI’s provincial leadership, saying its actions had weakened the party’s position.
“Your provincial leadership has pulled the ground from beneath your feet,” she remarked.
Referring to PTI leaders Asad Qaiser and Amir Dogar, the PPP senator said both had favoured taking action against terrorism. However, she alleged that the party’s provincial leadership had prioritised political manoeuvring in the hope of gaining political sympathy.
Rehman also disclosed that a draft concerning the proposed measures had been sent to the prime minister four times, with amendments incorporated during the process.
Clarifying her party’s stance, the senator rejected suggestions that the PPP had agreed to any unconstitutional action.
“Anyone who thinks the Peoples Party has agreed to an extra-constitutional measure is mistaken. We are the makers of the Constitution and respect it,” she said.
