WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump lashed out at Norway during a rally in Port Huron, Michigan, linking his anger over not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize to Norwegian immigration.
Trump said he would welcome immigrants from some countries but not Norway, adding, “I don’t want anybody from Norway” because he had not won the prize. He also used a vulgar insult to describe the country.
The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded this year to South African judge and former UN human rights chief Navi Pillay. Trump has called the decision “disgraceful and embarrassing” and argued the prize should have gone to him.
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide said the Nobel Committee operates independently, adding that Trump is aware of its independence. No change to US immigration policy for Norwegian nationals has been announced.
