Sindh Assembly has ended debate on new province, says Bilawal

KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said on Tuesday that the Sindh Assembly had put a “full stop” to discussions about creating a new province in Sindh, stressing that the province’s future could only be decided by its people.

Speaking at an event in Karachi, Bilawal also rejected reports of consultations between the federal government and the PPP regarding the proposed 28th Constitutional Amendment.

“The PPP’s stance on the province issue is clear and has been expressed repeatedly,” he said, adding that the people of Sindh and their elected representatives had already made their position known.

Bilawal said politicians should work to unite people rather than promote hatred and division. He also criticised Karachi-based members of the federal cabinet, accusing them of failing to deliver for the city.

He said the federal government had paid little attention to Karachi, while its representatives were allegedly engaged in spreading division. The PPP chairman urged the centre to focus more on the city’s problems and called for stronger cooperation between federal and provincial institutions to improve public services.

Turning to economic concerns, Bilawal said the government had a responsibility to provide relief to citizens amid high inflation and unemployment.

He added that the Sindh government was working to ease the financial pressure on households, particularly as rising electricity bills had made it increasingly difficult for people to manage their expenses.

Bilawal also revealed that he had been considering a plan to shift the entire Lyari area to solar energy. He said the provincial government was pursuing initiatives to provide residents with access to solar power.
