Nepra approves Rs2.37 per unit electricity price hike for November bills

ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has approved an increase of Rs2.37 per unit in electricity tariffs under the monthly fuel price adjustment for September, which will be reflected in consumers’ November bills.

The increase will also be applicable to K-Electric customers, according to the regulator’s decision.

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) had sought a higher adjustment of Rs2.56 per unit for September.

In a separate decision, Nepra approved a Rs2.32 per unit increase in the discounted electricity rate for additional consumption by industrial and agricultural consumers and forwarded the matter to the federal government.

Following the revision, the tariff under the additional consumption package will rise from Rs22.98 to Rs25.30 per unit, with the new rate coming into force from the November billing cycle.

The federal government currently provides subsidies of Rs11 to Rs15 per unit to industrial and agricultural consumers on electricity used beyond their regular consumption levels.

The decision was taken through the casting vote of the Nepra chairman, while two members, Amna Ahmed and Maqsood Anwar Khan, recorded their dissenting opinions.

In their notes, the dissenting members questioned the basis of the revised tariff of Rs25.30 per unit, describing it as unjustified.

Last October, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the ‘Roshan Economy Power Package’, introducing a discounted rate of Rs22.98 per unit for additional electricity consumption by industrial and agricultural sectors.

The three-year initiative, covering November 2025 to October 2028, was designed to encourage industrial production, boost exports and create employment opportunities by offering reduced rates on electricity consumed above the previous year’s usage.

Under the scheme, regular electricity consumption continued to be charged at existing tariffs, while only additional units qualified for the discounted rate.

The package also introduced a tiered relief mechanism, offering greater tariff concessions to industrial and agricultural consumers as their electricity consumption increased.
