LAHORE: Alkhidmat Foundation Women Trust has organised a mass wedding ceremony for 60 deserving girls, providing the newlyweds with financial support and essential household items to help them begin their married lives with dignity.
Each bride received a wedding gift package, cash salami and other household necessities, while a meal was also arranged for the brides and their families.
The ceremony highlighted the importance of keeping weddings simple and avoiding costly customs, excessive spending and social pressures that can place an additional burden on families.
Women from various fields also participated in a discussion titled “From Rituals to Relationships,” focusing on the social and financial challenges surrounding marriage ceremonies.
Dr Humaira Tariq said helping deserving girls get married was an important component of Alkhidmat’s welfare work. She said the organisation aimed to ease the financial pressure on deserving families while ensuring that daughters received a dignified send-off.
She added that Alkhidmat continued to provide humanitarian services across Pakistan without discrimination.
Saima Shabbir said the organisation had distributed 16,700 wedding gift boxes over the past five years, spending around Rs1.02 billion on the initiative. She described the packages as a means of expressing solidarity, compassion and support for families in need.
She stressed that marriage ceremonies should focus on relationships and happiness rather than expensive traditions and unnecessary social expectations.
Saba Saqib said financial difficulties had made arranging a daughter’s wedding increasingly challenging for low-income families. She called on financially secure members of society to support deserving families and share in their celebrations.
The mass wedding brought together 60 couples and their families, while also highlighting the broader role of society in helping vulnerable families overcome financial hardships and celebrate important milestones with dignity.
