KARACHI: By-election is currently underway for the Senate seat from Sindh that became vacant following the passing of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Taj Haider.
The two main contenders for the seat are Waqar Mehdi of the PPP and Nighat Mirza representing Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-Pakistan).
According to the Secretary of the Sindh Assembly, a total of 161 members are eligible to cast their votes in this crucial election.
The breakdown of the assembly’s composition is as follows: the PPP holds a significant majority with 116 members, MQM-Pakistan has 36 members, and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has 5 members.
To secure victory in the Senate election, a candidate needs to obtain at least 81 votes.
Polling for the by-election began at 9 am and is scheduled to continue until 4 pm. The outcome of the election will determine who fills the vacant Senate seat from Sindh.
