WEB DESK: Canada has announced a series of new immigration initiatives set to launch in 2026, aimed at simplifying the process for international medical professionals, including Pakistani doctors, to attain permanent residency.
The updated measures could open doors for Pakistani physicians, contingent upon their qualifications, professional experience, and compliance with Canadian immigration and licensing standards. Medical practitioners can pursue permanent residence through various programs such as Express Entry, the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), and other regional immigration schemes.
It is important to note that securing a permanent residency or work permit does not automatically grant the right to practice medicine in Canada. Doctors without prior Canadian medical work experience are encouraged to explore alternative pathways, including the Atlantic Immigration Program, provincial nomination routes, and rural or Francophone community immigration programs.
Eligibility criteria differ across programs and provinces. Prospective applicants are advised to verify licensing requirements, credential assessments, examinations, and language proficiency (English or French) before applying. Internationally trained physicians must have their medical qualifications evaluated and obtain licensure from the medical regulatory authority in the province or territory where they intend to work.
A new category has been introduced within the Express Entry system for medical doctors, allowing eligible candidates to receive invitations to apply for permanent residence. To qualify, applicants generally need to meet the criteria of one of the three programs managed under Express Entry and have at least one year of full-time medical practice in Canada within the past three years.
Furthermore, up to 5,000 spots under the federal Provincial Nominee Program have been allocated specifically for medical professionals. Doctors with secured employment, a confirmed job offer, or a support letter from a relevant organization may pursue this route, subject to provincial regulations and requirements.
