CJP Takes Notice of PU Ex-VC’s Court Appearance in Handcuffs

Lahore (October 12, 2018): Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar on Friday took suo motu notice of putting handcuffs on former Punjab University vice-chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran and other officials.

Justice Nisar while taking suo motu notice of the incident summoned the director general of National Accountability Bureau’s Lahore office at the Supreme Court registry.Dr Mujahid Kamran is accused of involvement in a case pertaining to alleged illegal appointments in connivance with ex-registrars of the university during his two consecutive terms by virtue of extension awarded to him.He along with other accused appeared in the accountability court on Friday where Justice Najmul Hassan handed over the suspects to NAB investigators on a 10-day physical remand.

Earlier on October 12, an accountability court of Lahore on Friday approved 10 days physical remand of former Vice-Chancellor of Punjab University, Dr Kamran Mujahid.

National Accountability Bureau (NAB) produced Dr. Mujahid Kamran before the accountability court along with five other accused named Dr. Liaquat, Dr. Aurangzaib, Dr. Raas Masood, Dr. Kamran Zahid and Ameen Athar.

During the hearing, the former VC maintained that he served with sheer honesty throughout his tenure.

Regarding charges of illegal appointments, Dr. Mujahid said that all hirings approved by him were presented before the syndicate. He refused to admit that none of the employee, he appointed, was ghost or fake, the official record of all employees exists, Karman added.

The court handed over Mujahid Kamran and other accused on 10 days physical remand to NAB.

The former VC is accused of committing gross irregularities during his stint at the varsity.

He is alleged to have to provide jobs at the university in violation of the laws.

Earlier on October 11, Former vice chairman of Punjab University Mujahid Kamran was arrested on charges of corruption and irregularities.

Kamran was formally taken into custody after he appeared at the NAB office to record his statement.
