Data darbar donation scam uncovered as probe launched into record tampering

LAHORE: A fresh case of alleged embezzlement involving donations collected at Data Darbar has surfaced, with a forensic examination reportedly finding evidence of tampering with official records over several years.

Sources said foreign currency received as donations at the shrine was allegedly misappropriated. According to preliminary findings, US dollars collected from devotees were reportedly converted into Indian currency before the funds disappeared.

The alleged irregularities are said to have taken place over the past five years through manipulation of donation records.

Following the forensic findings, the Punjab Auqaf and Religious Affairs Department has constituted a high-level committee to conduct a detailed inquiry into the matter.

Investigations have been initiated against former Data Darbar administrator Sheikh Jamil and former manager Tahir Maqsood. Zonal administrators Gulab Irshad and Shahid Hameed Virk are also facing an inquiry.

Punjab Auqaf Secretary Dr Ehsan Bhatta confirmed that records related to devotees’ donations had been tampered with and said the department was investigating the allegations.

He added that departmental action would be taken against those found responsible once the inquiry is completed.
